Why chimney caps fail here, and what a proper replacement involves

Most caps in Deptford rust from the inside out. Flue gas carries moisture, and year-round Delaware Valley humidity keeps the stack damp between fires. Thin galvanized lids go first. The mesh crumbles at the welds. Then chimney swifts and squirrels walk right in through the hole.

A cracked or missing crown gets addressed before anything bolts to it. And if swifts are actively nesting, the work waits, since they are federally protected. Check your brick for rust streaks below the crown. That is a cap already failing.
